Welcome to a new addition of the NAISS training newsletter.   In this edition we have 4 new events.  The NAISS introduction training week is particularly suitable for new users of the NAISS infrastructure.   In addition we have workshops on AWK for data extractions, File transfer at intermediate level and setting up software containers.

An up-to-date list of the upcoming events is available on the online listing of upcoming NAISS training courses (NAISS).

NAISS training

Online training workshop: “AWK Workshop", 27-28 August, 2026

AWK is an interpreted programming language designed for text processing and typically used as a data extraction and reporting tool.

This two-day workshop aims to promote and demonstrate the flexibility of the tool, where the overhead of more sophisticated approaches and programming languages is not worth the bother.

Learn how to:

  • use Awk as an advanced grep command, capable of arithmetic selection rules with control over the content of the matched lines
  • perform simple conversions, analysis or filter you data on the fly making it easy to plot or read in your favorite research tool
  • handle and take advantage of data split over multiple file data sets
  • use Awk as simple function or data generator
  • perform simple sanity checks on your results

The workshop aims to promote the awk tool for use in everyday research work and urges you to find solutions yourself rather than expecting ready-made ones. The material given during the seminar will not be a complete guide or a manual but rather an overview of the capabilities, particular strengths, and common disadvantages.

Online training courses: NAISS Introduction training week, 14th - 18th September 2026

The NAISS introduction training week offers seven modules distributed over 5 days.   Each module describes a particular aspect of the NAISS systems.   You are welcome to choose and pick the modules that best address your existing knowledge, your interest and your requirements.  For each module we provide a separate description, which should allow you to make an informed choice on the modules you wish to attend.

The course modules are particularly aimed at new users of the infrastructure.  They are also suitable for experienced users, wishing to deepen their understanding of the workings of the systems.

The training week offers the following modules:

  • Linux Command Line 101
  • Connecting and File transfer
  • Selecting software modules
  • Running jobs on clusters
  • Linux Command Line 202
  • Running AI/ML workloads on NAISS systems
  • Handling sensitive data at NAISS

Participants can attend as many of the modules as they wish.

Online workshop: File Transfer 102, 2 October, 2026

In this interactive 3-hour workshop, you will learn how to transfer files to and from Swedish academic HPC clusters. The workshop focuses on practical, hands-on use of terminal-based tools. By the end of the workshop, you will be able to:

  • Transfer files between your local computer and an HPC cluster
  • Transfer files between different clusters
  • Choose appropriate tools for different file transfer scenarios
  • This workshop is intended for users with prior knowledge equivalent to the Log in and transfer course.

You do not need to already be a member of a NAISS project in order to attend. Temporary access to a course project on a NAISS cluster will be provided.

Online training workshop: Basic Singularity/Apptainer workshop, 12 and/or 13 October, 2026

The online workshop is an introduction to the basic concepts of containerised software environment solutions within the Singularity framework (Sylabs).

During the workshop you will have the opportunity to follow the interactive guide on

  • How to run Singularity containers
  • How to build your own
  • Hood (and bad) practices on designing and building Singularity recipes
  • Singularity containers and HPC applications

To fully benefit from the workshop, some basic Linux system administration experience is highly desirable i.e. knowledge of package management and common tools for building and/or managing software: git, pip, conda, wget, curl …

The workshop will be divided in 3 main sessions - look for details at web page with practical information for the Basic Singularity/Apptainer workshop and register for sessions you want to attend.

Online workshop: DEEP Inspection for Materials Science – Classification, 22–24 September 2026

Inspection and characterisation of materials are essential for quality control, materials development, and advanced manufacturing, yet conventional image analysis is time-consuming and difficult to scale.

This three-half-day workshop offers a focused, hands-on introduction to deep learning for visual inspection in materials science, using the Severstal Steel Defect Detection dataset as a running example. Participants will build and train defect classifiers from scratch, explore feature embeddings, apply transfer learning with pre-trained models (VGG, ResNet, ViT), and compare state-of-the-art architectures. By the end, attendees will understand how modern neural networks process image data and gain practical experience in implementing CNN-based solutions for defect classification, microstructure recognition, and intelligent quality assessment. Online workshop: DEEP Inspection for Materials Science – Detection and Segmentation, 1 October 2026

Detecting where a defect is—not just whether it exists—is the next critical step in real-world materials inspection.

This one-day workshop focuses on object detection and instance segmentation, equipping participants with the tools to localise and delineate multiple defects within a single image. Using steel defect detection and glass fibre analysis as hands-on case studies, attendees will progress from raw annotated data to a trained, inference-ready YOLO model in a single session. The course covers detection fundamentals (bounding boxes, IoU, NMS), YOLO architecture for both object detection and segmentation, transfer learning, and practical workflows for data preparation, training, evaluation, and visualisation.

Online workshop: Practical Data Wrangling, 15-16 September

Abstract: Data is essential in data-driven projects, as it forms the foundation for all subsequent analysis, modeling, and decision-making. Depending on the specific task, raw data may be collected from a wide variety of sources such as databases, APIs, sensors, logs, documents, or images. Before it can be effectively used for analysis or machine learning, raw data must be cleaned, transformed, validated, and organized into a consistent and usable format. As data comes in many different forms, including numerical, categorical, time series, text, event/log, and image data, the tools and techniques used for data wrangling can vary significantly depending on the data type and the requirements of the task.

In this workshop, we will cover practical data wrangling techniques for numerical, categorical, time series, text, event/log, and image data. Participants will learn how to detect and handle missing values, outliers, inconsistencies, duplicates, and formatting problems. We will demonstrate methods for transforming and encoding categorical variables, parsing and aggregating temporal data, processing unstructured text, analyzing event logs, and preparing image datasets for machine learning and analytics. Each session combines concepts, demonstrations, and hands-on exercises using realistic datasets to help participants develop practical skills that can be applied immediately in downstream modeling tasks.

Webinar: Foundation Models for Atoms: Machine-Learned Interatomic Potentials in Practice, 30 September

Abstract: Quantum-mechanical methods such as density functional theory (DFT) are accurate but limited to small systems and short timescales. Classical force fields are fast but often not accurate or transferable enough. Machine-learned interatomic potentials (MLIPs) could break this trade-off between accuracy and scale, and the field is now moving at remarkable speed. So-called universal or “foundation” models (e.g. MACE-MP, UMA, MatterSim, Orb, the DPA/OpenLAM series) are pre-trained on tens to hundreds of millions of DFT calculations spanning the periodic table.

In this webinar, we will give a conceptual tour of this rapidly evolving landscape and what it means for everyday computational research on HPC systems. This includes ML making its way into electronic-structure theory itself, with learned density functionals. We will also include a short demo on European HPC resources. Throughout, we will point to open models, datasets, benchmarks, and codes. Participants can try these on their own problems right after the webinar.

KCSC Summer School

KCSC Summer School,  20 - 21 August, 24 - 28 August 2026

The school focuses on the skills needed to utilise high-performance computing (HPC) resources for research. It consists of lectures and guided hands-on lab exercises using the Dardel HPC system. The school includes an introduction to parallel algorithms, parallel programming, modern HPC architectures, performance analysis and engineering, and software engineering. Case studies in various scientific disciplines will be used to help illustrate practical research applications of the topics.
