Survey on R training needs on SNIC resources

The SNIC training team would appreciate your input regarding training requirements in the in the R language and environment for statistical computing and graphics.  Please participate in a short survey which should not take a lot of time to fill.  The survey will close on 22 June 2019.

The survey is hosted by LUNARC on behalf of SNIC.  It is available at this link: https://sunet.artologik.net/lu/Survey/24336

Training Workshop: “NIVIDIA GPU Boot Camp and Deep Learning”, in Stockholm, 24-25 Sept 2019

This two-day event will start with a GPU boot camp, which is an exciting and unique way for scientists and researchers to learn the skills needed to start quickly accelerating codes on GPUs. We will introduce you to available GPU libraries, programming models, and platforms where you will learn the basics of GPU programming through extensive hands-on collaboration based on a real-life code using the OpenACC programming model. Whether you’re a seasoned researcher or novice programmer, you’re welcome to join this boot camp.

On the second day, you will learn deep learning techniques for a range of computer vision tasks through a series of hands-on exercises. You will work with widely-used deep learning tools, frameworks, and workflows to train and deploy neural network models on a fully-configured, GPU-accelerated workstation in the cloud. The workshop will cover: building and deploying deep learning applications for image classification and object detection, modifying your neural networks to improve their accuracy and performance, and implementing the workflow you have learned on a final project.

Lecturer: NVIDIA staff

Location: Room Fantum, Lindstedtsvägen 24, F-huset, floor 5, KTH, Stockholm

Training Seminar: “VASP best practices” in Uppsala, 11 June 2019, 13:15-15:00

Weine Olovsson (NSC) will visit Uppsala on 11th June and give a training seminar about how to run VASP efficiently on supercomputers.  Case studies will be shown with examples from Beskow and Tetralith.  The seminar will consider parallel efficiency and memory usage for different calculations, including influential settings such as NPAR, NCORE, NSIM and KPAR.  In addition, Diana Iusan (UPPMAX) will demonstrate VASP usage on Rackham.  The last part of the seminar will be for questions, problems and general discussion.

New Location: Å80109, Ångström Laboratory, Uppsala University, Uppsala

No registration required.  For questions, contact diana.iusan@physics.uu.se.  Event webpage: https://www.nsc.liu.se/support/Events/VASP_seminars_2019/

Training Seminar: “VASP best practices” in Linköping, 14 June 2019, 13:15-15:00

Weine Olovsson (NSC) will give a training seminar at Linköping University on 14th June about how to run VASP efficiently on supercomputers.  Case studies will be shown with examples from Beskow and Tetralith.  The seminar will consider parallel efficiency and memory usage for different calculations, including influential settings such as NPAR, NCORE, NSIM and KPAR.  The last part of the seminar will be for questions, problems and general discussion.

Location: Jordan/Fermi (J402), F-house, Campus Valla, Linköping University, Linköping

Training Seminar: “Applying for large-scale computer time allocations within SNIC”, various locations, September/October 2019

In Sweden, SNIC (Swedish National Infrastructure for Computing) is responsible for providing large-scale computer resources for all academic users.  There are essentially three levels of grants: SMALL, MEDIUM and LARGE.  Whereas the former two are handled at the six hosting centres individually, the LARGE applications are dealt with by the SNAC (Swedish National Allocation Committee) twice a year.  In this seminar, Philipp Schlatter (current chairperson of SNAC) will introduce the SNIC operation, and the specific procedures of how these large allocations are handled will be discussed.  In addition, there is the possibility to ask questions about the required content of the applications for a LARGE computational project, and best practice guidelines for writing these applications.

Speaker: Philipp Schlatter (current chairperson of SNAC)

The seminar will be offered at various locations in Sweden in September/October.  Details will be announced after the summer.

NeIC Nordic Training Calendar:

The NeIC Nordic Training Calendar gives an overview on eScience related training throughout the Nordics.  Have a look at https://neic.no/training/#neic-training-calendar for an overview on training in Nordic partner countries that is typically accessible to Swedish academic research.  The page also provides direct links to training portals of the national e-Science provides in the Nordics.

In addition to these news letters we also provide a SNIC training webpage: http://docs.snic.se/wiki/Training

This webpage currently gives an overview on all courses currently planed.  It provides links to more information and the actual registration.  The webpage also includes training which is expected to be mostly of interest to individual SNIC centres.  Information will be added to this page as it becomes available.
