– Published 14 December 2020

Welcome to the latest edition of the SNIC training newsletter.  In this edition we newly advertise a training event suitable for new users of SNIC, centering around the Kebnekaise system.  ENCCS informed us about an online workshop on the CMake build system.

The SNIC training team wishes everyone a merry Christmas and a happy new year.

Training aimed at new users of the SNIC infrastructure:

Training course: "Introduction to HPC and Kebnekaise" in Umeå, 21 January 2021

HPC2N is offering an introduction course to HPC and our systems.

We begin with a short (optional) introduction to Linux, then continue with an introduction to HPC and a walkthrough of Kebnekaise, including the GPUs and the KNLs.  In the afternoon we look at the module system and loading the software you need, and how to submit jobs through the batch system.

There will be a hands-on part of the course, where the participants get the opportunity to load modules, compile programs, and submit jobs to the Kebnekaise system.

Online interactive support and discussion forum:

LUNARC zoom-in - a virtual open-house: 14th December from 14:00 until 15:00

LUNARC invites you to a virtual meeting room.  Inside the meeting room we like to discuss LUNARC and SNIC services and how they can be used for your computational needs, help you process your data and visualise your results.  Participants are highly encouraged to pose their own questions.

BioExcel/ENCCS online workshop – Advanced topics in simulations with GROMACS January 12-15, 2021, 09:00-12:30

In collaboration with BioExcel, ENCCS is offering an online workshop on advanced GROMACS simulations taught by Dr Mark Abraham, Dr Christian Blau, and Dr Artem Zhmurov. The workshop will be all-virtual on 4 successive mornings January 12-15 2021, 09:00-12:30.

Tentative schedule:

January 12 – Using umbrella-sampling (“pulling”) simulations
January 13 – Using replica-exchange molecular dynamics
January 14 – Using applied-weight histogram methods (“AWH”)
January 15 – Computing trajectories efficiently on GPUs

All sessions will include presentations and hands-on live-coding-style material. Some material will be delivered within virtual machines supplied to the students beforehand that they can install and run on their own computers, and some via access to remote compute clusters.

For further information and registration, please visit https://enccs.se/events/2021/01/advanced-topics-in-simulations-with-gromacs/
The event page will be updated with more detailed information shortly.

“ENCCS online workshop on CMake”, February 9-10, 09:00-12:30

CMake is a language-agnostic, cross-platform build tool and is nowadays the de facto standard, with large projects using it to reliably build, test, and deploy their codebases. In this workshop you will learn how to:

  • Write a CMake build system for C, C++, and Fortran projects producing libraries and/or executables.
  • Run tests for your code with CTest.
  • Ensure your build system will work on different platforms.
  • Detect and use external dependencies in your project.
  • Safely and effectively build mixed-language projects (Python+C/C++, Python+Fortran, Fortran+C/C++)

In addition to these news letters we also provide a SNIC training webpage: http://docs.snic.se/wiki/Training

This webpage currently gives an overview on all courses currently planed.  It provides links to more information and the actual registration.  The webpage also includes training which is expected to be mostly of interest to individual SNIC centres.  Information will be added to this page as it becomes available.
